Extra police officers will be on patrol for drunk drivers through Sept. 4 as part of a massive effort to stop drunken drivers dubbed "You Drink & Drive. You Lose."
The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning has provided funding for boosted patrols. More than 500 agencies in Michigan have signed up for the efforts, according to a press release.
"While alcohol-related fatalities have been declining statewide over the past few years, drunk driving has not gone away in Michigan," said Michael Prince, OHSP division director.
To that end, an additional $635,000 has been allocated to Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Genesee and Kent counties for drunk-driving patrols. Those counties were home to 40 percent of the states alcohol-related fatalities. Patrols will pay special attention during the so-called happy hours, which happens in the early evening after work.
